What is a doula?

Doula is a Greek word referring to an experienced woman who helps other women. It means slave or servant to a woman in labour. Doula’s are trained and experienced in supporting couples and families during pregnancy and childbirth. Having a doula can provide comfort and information to the woman/couple during the miracle of pregnancy, birth and the first weeks with a new baby. Doula’s are also known as Childbirth Assistants, Labour Support professionals, Birth Companions, Birth Attendants, or Labour Coaches. You may choose to have a doula to support you during pregnancy, provide birth plan help, be there for you in labour at home, birth centre, or hospital, and/or to provide information and support at home in the first weeks with your new baby.
